How do I know if it's Quality Furniture?

The last article I wrote talked about the 'Master Seal' and this is a great way to check to see if the piece of furniture that you are interested in, is a quality piece. But you might be interested in taking the next step.

You need to really look 'under the hood' to really see if the piece is of good quality. By quality, I'm talking about it lasting! Not just lasting  2 years before breaking, more like 20+ years. Can you buy furniture that lasts that long these days? Yes you can.

To see if you are buying a quality piece look for these things:

  • Joints that are firm, that don't feel like they will come apart any time soon.
  • Wood that is solid and well treated and not carved too thin. It is common that wood used is of not high quality, in fact we have seen furniture where the crates they came packaged in had better wood! So make sure you know what the wood is.
  • All the pieces are attached securely (bolts, glue, mixture of two), not just the arms, but what about the back and legs?
  • Webbing that is of adequate width, and tension.
  • Springs that are tied down well! Not with just a few knots.
  • This is a somewhat subjective idea, but good furniture makes you confident it will last a good long time - does it just 'feel' like it will last a lifetime?
  • Quality furniture is built to adapt over time. A chair should be built to  anticipate wear and tear, make sure it looks like it will.

It's common for modern furniture to be built for price, and that translates to it not lasting all that long. Whereas, older furniture took account of usage and materials and that meant standing the test of time. However, it is easy to build to LAST for 100 years but hard to build something that keeps its style for 100 years. So where do you draw the line?

Quality furniture uses good materials in the right proportion while not being trendy or overly “modern”. With good thought and design (and some up front cost) good furniture can be durable and beautiful.

If you would like help in determining if the furniture you are considering for your business is good quality, call us on 0800 698 746 or email us at action@upholsterfitouts.co.nz and we'll help you out.

Is there anything that you think I missed in determining quality?
